Spoiler: All Things

Summary: Scully owes coffee for whatever happened
that night.

Now, please be nice. I am out of practice. Just disappeared
for a while.

Disclaimers: As I have said, about 200 times, and
that is the truth, Chris Carter and his team, plus
1013 Productions and Fox Studios own all original
characters. I promise to bring everyone back safe
and sound, clean and well-dressed. This is just my
playgound, and the characters are my toys. No money
ever changes hands. (Sniff). Even if Mr. Carter
wrecked them royally in the six-part re-boot. My
apologies, but you KNEW what we really wanted.
Remember, you were interviewed about that? Try
again, please. Please.

Author's Note: Title from Mulder's Creek Title
Challlenge.

Scully woke up, washed up and dressed and went back
to Georgetown. No one goes to work in clothing from
the day before. It was only 6:15 a.m. anyway, so she
ran to the car and hurried home. Why wake Mulder so
early anyway?

*Coffee*, she thought. *His favourite flavor.* She
really had to admit last night was good. She
remembered staggering into Mulder's bedroom and the
awesome love-making. Now she owed him. They admitted
it was love. Doing "the wild thing" for the first time
and most likely not the last as she was barren, or so
she had been told. No eggs, no periods, no need for
protection. She knew it was a sin and asked God's
forgiveness. It had been a very long time.

So, she drove into Washington to Starbuck's, bought his
favorite coffee and her own, a few donuts and was only
a minute late for work.

Just Mulder's smirk. It seemed they were reading each
other, and remembering what had happened.

Scully thought this was going to be awkward. She placed
the coffees and donuts on the desk, her purse on the
floor. As she sat in front of the man, she broke the
ice. "Good morning, Mulder. Coffee and donuts, as you
like them."

Mulder took the coffee right away. "So, no good-byes?"

Hmm. "I had to change my clothes, Mulder. I was here
yesterday after I went to the hospital. I wanted to let
you sleep."

"So, it finally happened and the rumor mill wins."

"Not exactly. How do we deal with this situation?" She
patiently sipped her coffee."

"Like everyone else. We could both see it coming. You
know that."

"It was never said. I knew it was going to happen."
She began wondering if it was a good idea to tell
Skinner about their 'situation'.

Mulder could see the wheels turning. "We need to tell
Skinner, because I believe he already suspects. Other
partnered agents have relationships, get engaged, even
marry. They work quite well together."

"I suppose you're right. Actually, I was over Daniel
years ago. He was married and wanted an affair. His
daughter most certainly did not want to see me there
because she thought I was a home-wrecker. He was only
my mentor and a friend. Visiting a friend in a bad
medical condition was just something I felt I needed
to do. It was tempting... I haven't been involved
with anyone in years..."

"Okay. You don't have to read me a history book."
Another sip of coffee. "When did you first know?"

Unfortunately, there was a knock at the door.

"Rats," he muttered. "We WILL discuss this later."

"Door's open."

It was Skinner. The two tried to look busy sorting papers.

"At least you have your coffees. The building has none until
some time this afternoon. Mulder, weren't you supposed to be
out of the country?"

"Sorry, Sir. False lead. What can we do for you?"

"We have another case for you, especially with your medical
and psychological qualifications. Please don't come up with
any oddities now. Here's the file. I'm sorry I have to rush.
I am overloaded with paperwork right now. At least this is
close enough to home." His cell rang. "Skinner. Yes, I'm on
my way." After the call was over, he stood and said, "No need
to pack. Just read and leave this afternoon."

"Okay," Mulder replied. "Take it easy Sir. You look stressed
out."

"Thanks for your concern. Too many agents on vacation.
After the assignment is over, both of you have vacation
time coming."

"You could use one, too," Scully advised him.

"I can only try. Take care."

After the door closed behind him, the pair continued.

Mulder sipped his cold coffeee and grabbed a donut.
"So, when did you first know?"

"The day I first saw you here, looking like a lonely
little schoolboy. You?" She smiled broadly, looking like
the cat who had swallowed the canary.

"When you walked out and said, "See you tomorrow."

They both shared a laugh, hoping nobody would hear.

Mulder opened the file. "Well, mostly mainstream. Amber
alert for a missing girl, age 5, green eyes, blonde hair,
4'2". Last seen after school yesterday. White blouse,
navy blue pants, Reebock shoes. Elm Street."

"So why isn't this the P.D.'s job?"

"Divorce. Mother thinks Dad may have pulled a fast one."

"Kidnapping?"

"From what it says here, the family doctor suspected Mom was
practicing parental alienation. Wouldn't let the father use
his visitation rights. I guess the courthouse is our first
stop. See what the records say, then get a description from
the mother. Ellen and Gary Bates, parents of only child
Melanie. BTW, we will talk later. Oh, I just read this woman
is bipolar."

"I guess the doctor has heard by now. He should be easy to
find and could be charged. Ready when you are, after lunch.
Do you want to talk now or read the emails?"

"Read the emails. Most likely lots of junk." Mulder started
pressing keys.

Scully just stared into space. "I think we shoud talk
now."

Mulder stopped dead in his tracks. "Okay, we took
things further. Are you sure you want to go through with
this?"

"Well... yes. I see no reason to put it off any
longer. You?"

"Positive. Let's get the old work cleared up, go for
lunch, then see about Melanie Bates."

As it turned out, Melanie was found safe with her
father at the same coffee shop as Mulder and Scully
entered the place. They flashed their badges and asked
a few questions.

Bates refused to return his daughter to her mother.

"I love my little girl. Listen, I have a good job.
We signed visitation papers. I pay support. Ellen
has bipolar disorder, and is under a doctor's care."

"I never see my Mom take her pills," Melanie added.

Scully knelt down beside the girl. "Are you sure?"

"Yes. I miss my Daddy a lot. Mom acts weird a lot,
And the lady next door feeds me more then my Mom
does."

Mulder asked who the doctor was.

"Dr. Spencer. Look, I didn't mean to cause any
trouble. I have no idea what he is doing. I still care
about Ellen, but I have been to hell and back with the
divorce, custody and visitation."

"Then I would advise you to speak with your lawyer. We
can call off the Amber Alert."

"What?"

"Melanie was reported missing by her mother this
morning, " Scully advised the man. "Don't worry. Just get
your lawyer, he will know what to do. We can deal with
your wife. I need to tell you, Child Protection Services
should be involved."

Gary was stunned. "I see. So what about Melanie?"

"Don't worry," Mulder told him. "It will only be
temporary. Maybe over night. We can't be certain."

Gary held his daughter for a few moments, "Honey,
don't worry. Things will be all right."

"Okay, Daddy. I can go with these nice people. I hope
Mom gets real help this time."

Melanie was escorted by Mulder and Scully to C.P.S.
and taken over night to a foster home.

After both agents returned to the office, they filled
out the paper work, occasionally exchanging smiles.

"Mulder, I am done."

"Yeah, me too. Almost quitting time. Supper? My treat."

"Why not? Tell me something. Would you ever do that to
me if I had your child, fell ill and kept her away from
you?"

"Only to protect someone who's a beautiful lady I loved
needing help, and I would really love a child created
with you." That smile.

"Thank you, I have longed to hear that, but I never
thought I would hear it from you." Tears rolled
down her cheeks as she stood. Let"s go."

"After you. Just one thing: dry your eyes. Don't
let the others think I made you cry."

"These are tears of happiness, Mulder. You are my
happiness."

He stood, caressed her face, then they kissed
passionately, and as they locked the office to leave,
a male cleaner gave them a knowing wink.

"Mullins," Scully whispered, "I guess... uhh..."

"Just doing my job, Agent. Enjoy your evening. My wife
and I met at work twelve years ago. You met Sheila."

"Still together?" Mulder asked.

"You bet. My philosophy is this: When you meet the
right one, you know it. Your partner is a keeper."

Mulder nodded. "Yes. She is more than that. See you
tomorrow."

"Maybe, maybe not. The doctor is inducing her after I
leave later on."

"A baby?" Scully was smiling. "Congratulations."

"Thanks. I have work to do. Best wishes."

"You too." As Mulder walked Scully to the elevator, he
stopped and turned. "I know what you're thinking."

"Well, let's just think about it. It would be nice to
have a baby, but I was told I can't."

"Miracles happen, Scully. Let's get out of here."
