ONE SEPTEMBER EVENING, 2001
DANA SCULLY's APARTMENT

She had thought the man she saw beside William, in his crib
at the time, was Mulder. But alas, it was Jeffery Spender and
he had injected the infant with something and advised her it
would be impossible for her to protect her son.

This was going to be one difficult decision, causing her to lose
more sleep than she had lost nursing William. She was
wrestling with her mind for a few nights, her milk production
was slowly sliding so much she had to resort to pumping as
much as she could, and topping up with formula. Finally, she
found herself in tears. What would be best for the baby? Run
and hide? No. So one sad day, she contacted an adoption
agency, did some investigating, and made plans to send her
beautiful miracle boy somewhere safe.

Her mother, brothers, even nephew Matthew and sister-in-law
Tara would be sad. Brother Bill would find it absolutely
distasteful, thinking the infant was named after either himself
or their father, but her mind was made up. There was no other
choice, he no longer showed any signs of otherworldly
talents, but nevertheless it had to be so.

She chose the agency and prospective families for days on end,
until she found the right match. A childless couple who were
hard working people on a distant farm would be best for him,
she decided, and she knew she had no choice but to do what
Jeffery Spender had advised after having injected him with
magnetite, making William of no use to the aliens.

As the days went by, too quickly than she wanted them to, the
day was coming. On a sad Tuesday evening, she fed him,
softly humming, and tearfully whispered, "I am so sorry,
miracle baby mine. Your father and I will think of you every day,
my prayers will include you, and your grandmother... I have to
find a way to be as gentle as I can to tell her that you would be
in danger if I raised you, even if your father safely came back.
I know he will. Sweet dreams." She kissed him and gently placed
him in his crib, weeping for hours until sleep befell her. It was a
rather restless sleep.

THE FOLLOWING MORNING
7:35 AM

It was a sunny, warm day in Georgetown, but Scully's face and
heart were deep and sorrowful. After feeding, changing,
packing William's clothing and special cuddly toys, she placed
him gently in his crib. Since she wasn't hungry, she showered and
chose her clothing thinking, 'How can I tell Mulder this, if he
safely comes back? How? And Mom and Bill and Tara?'

It was agreed the social workers woud arrrive by around 9:00 and
she was crying, getting it all out. 'He'll be safer', she assured
herself. 'They won't know if I followed them.'

The drive was long and sad.

About an hour before their arrival at the Van deCamp home, she
noticed a suspicious car en route. They were being followed.

Well, since Skinner knew the plan, he ensured THAT was
taken care of. 'Good,' Scully whispered.

The female social workers were surprised to see her when they
had stopped for refreshments and William's feeding and
changing.

"Agent Scully?" a blond woman inquired.

"Yes... I just needed one more chance to deal with this. I'm not
backing out. Just a last good bye."

"It's all right," the woman's brunette colleague asssured her,
patting her on the shoulder.

"I am so sorry, William." Scully kissed her baby one last
time and drove off slowly. "This is best," she repeated all the way
home.

Several years along the way, all three of them would be a family.
She had to believe it, and it was so.
